How to Renew an Expired Domain and Transfer It to Regery

Updated over 3 months ago

Losing access to your domain can feel stressful — but don’t worry, you still have time and options to recover it. At Regery.com, we make it easy for you to renew an expired domain or transfer it to us while restoring full control. In this article, we'll explain the stages of domain expiration, status meanings, and what actions you need to take at each stage to successfully renew or restore your domain.

Domain Expiration Timeline and Statuses

When a domain expires, it doesn’t disappear from the internet immediately. Instead, it goes through several stages, each with its specific status and recovery options:

1. Expired (Auto-Renew Grace Period)

  • Status: Expired, Pending Renewal, Grace Period

  • Duration: Typically 0–30 days after the expiration date (varies by domain zone).

  • Action:
During this period, you can renew your domain at the standard renewal price without any penalties.
If you want to transfer your expired domain to Regery during this period:

    • Unlock the domain at your current registrar.

    • Request the domain's authorization (EPP) code.

    • Start the transfer to Regery and renew the domain as part of the transfer process.

2. Redemption Period (Restore Possible)

  • Status: Redemption Period, Pending Delete – Restorable

  • Duration: Usually 30–60 days after the expiration date.

  • Action:
If you didn't renew during the grace period, the domain enters Redemption status.
Now, the domain can still be restored, but it involves paying a higher redemption fee (set by the domain registry) in addition to the renewal fee.
    At this stage:

    • You cannot transfer the domain directly.

    • You must first restore it at your current registrar.

    • After restoration, you can unlock and transfer it to Regery if desired.

3. Pending Delete (No Recovery Possible)

  • Status: Pending Delete

  • Duration: About 5 days after the Redemption period.

  • Action:
At this point, recovery is no longer possible.
The domain is scheduled for permanent deletion. After deletion, it becomes publicly available for anyone to register.

    • You can monitor the domain's deletion and attempt to re-register it via Regery's backorder service.
