Can You Make WHOIS Information Public?

Updated over a month ago

When managing domain names, questions about WHOIS privacy often come up. One common inquiry we receive at Regery.com is: "Can you make WHOIS information public if it's currently hidden?"
Let's dive into how this works and what options you have.

Understanding WHOIS Privacy

WHOIS is a public database that stores information about domain owners, such as their name, address, phone number, and email.
In recent years, due to privacy regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), most domain registries automatically hide this information by default to protect users personal data.

However, not every domain is bound by GDPR restrictions. Some users prefer to have their WHOIS data publicly visible, especially if their business requires transparency or for branding purposes.

Is It Possible to Make WHOIS Information Public?

In general, it is not possible to manually change WHOIS information to public through the control panel because usually Whois server and contact data information is located on the registry.
Privacy protection is applied automatically on the registry level. This helps ensure that all users are compliant with international laws and prevents accidental exposure of sensitive information.
When Whois server is located on the registrar (.com, .net zones) technically it is possible to show domain contact information, but it depends on the registrar or partner whois server implementation.

That said, there are exceptions.

If your domain name, such as my-domain-name.uz, is not subject to GDPR and Whois server is located on Regery services or our partner support it via manual update and you specifically request to make your WHOIS data public, Regery support can review and assist you individually.

Important Notes

  • Not all domain registries allow changing WHOIS privacy settings manually.

  • Even if GDPR does not apply, some registries may enforce privacy by default.

  • Exposing personal information publicly can increase risks of spam, unwanted contacts, or phishing attacks. Proceed carefully!
